Self-treatment Stretches

Myofascial Release focuses on shifting tissue memory to release unconscious holding patterns that keep our body in a state of pain and illness. The therapist evaluates your postural alignment, soft tissue tension, present level of stress, and everyday habits that may be contributing to your pain. During a treatment, the therapist listens to your body and gently guides the body to let go. No force is ever used. Instead, you will feel a deep sense of peace as your tension decreases. We truly believe that you are the super power, the missing link, in healing yourself; therefore, every treatment is complimented with stretches for you to do at home. It is our mission to bring out the best in you and use our hands as a guide to open the doors of your healing potential. No one describes MFR better than the founder John F. Barnes. Initial treatment and Evaluation Paperwork

Please complete the attached paperwork and bring it with you to your first appointment. Remember not to apply any lotion or oils to your body the day of the session. Treatments are done on the skin. You are welcome to wear your undergarments or a loose fitting pair of shorts and a tank top. For men, swimsuits work great for treatments. Please avoid any tight fitting clothing. All treatments are done in a private room. Payment is due at the time of your treatment. Cash, check or credit card is accepted. You are welcome to use an HSA card as long as you have a doctor’s script.

*A doctor’s script is not necessary to receive treatment, but is greatly appreciated. Here is an example of a script indicating the need for occupational therapy services Ex: Occupational therapy or Myofascial Release for neck pain M54.5. Please make sure your doctor includes the diagnosis code. With a doctor’s script, it may improve your chance for reimbursement from your insurance company if the treatments are deemed medically necessary, and sales tax will not be charged to your treatment.

What is Fascia?

The fascial system is the superglue of your body located in every cell, organ, bone, nerve, and muscle. Your skeletal system provides shape to your body while your muscles keep the bones aligned, but it is your fascial system that binds the body together. It is a three dimensional web throughout our body connecting us from head to toe supporting, stabilizing, and cushioning our organs. How does Fascia get restricted?

Through physical and psychological trauma, repetitive motions of everyday activities, and the strengthening of compensatory muscles, fascia becomes thickened and shortened loosing its fluidity and elasticity creating fascial restrictions. This is a protective response to keep the body safe from harm, but prolonged guarding alters the body’s natural alignment causing pain and dysfunction. Fascial restrictions have the capability of placing 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch on a restricted area. Thus, it cannot be forced to change, but requires at least 2-5 minutes to alter the memory and begin to elongate. As the saying goes, old habits are hard to break, so is the fascial tissue memory. Therefore, the stretches and releases are given ample time to adapt to the change without recoiling to their original state.

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a corrective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into fascial restrictions allowing the body time to adjust to let go of the protective barriers that are causing pain and illness. The recipient of MFR is very active in feeling and communicating with the body saying I have survived, I am safe, and I let go. These powerful words will shift the body’s need to protect, change the tissue memory, and release tension.

Myofascial release is comprised of three interwoven techniques including deep tissue release, rebounding and unwinding. During a deep tissue release, you will be placed in positions that will allow your body to assist with the releases as the therapist calmly provides just enough pressure to soften and stretch the are being addressed. This prevents the body from perceiving an attack and increasing the tension. A treatment may also incorporate the use of a gentle rocking motion referred to as rebounding. This movement instills a temporary state of confusion in which the body lets go of its holding patterns. MFR is most unique in the facilitation of a natural form of stretching know as unwinding. Unwinding allows the body to freely move into positions which untangle the three dimensional fascial restrictions as the therapist provides support to decrease the effects of gravity and keep you safe.

What should I expect during a treatment?

An MFR treatment differs from a standard massage as you play an active role in allowing your body to release the physical and psychological fascial restrictions. Your first treatment will begin with a thorough review of your medical history, present symptoms, and body mechanics/ ergonomic recommendations. Then your MFR therapist will guide you through an evaluation of your body’s alignment educating you to see and feel how your fascial system is compromised. This will be important in completing your self-treatment program at home and enhancing your inner awareness. Without awareness there is no cure.

Then the healing begins. Gentle pressures of stretch or compression are applied into the fascial system until resistance is felt. Here, we slow down, listen, and feel letting our intuition and God become our guide. In stillness, our soul, can speak to us providing reassurance that we have survived and we are safe. As the body comes to realize that the danger is over, you are able to give your body permission to let go of your protective shields of defense resulting in the release of pain and illness. Treatments can range from 1-3 hours.

Once the initial evaluation process is completed, you will receive over an hour of hands on treatment comprised of deep tissue release, rebounding and unwinding. Guided meditation may also be utilized during your treatment if deemed necessary.

Your treatment will end with a custom designed self-treatment program incorporating gentle, prolonged stretches to maintain a neutral pelvis and spine. These stretches and techniques become a way of life much like exercising and eating. Adding quiet stretching time to gather your thoughts and give your body the escape it needs from everyday fascial restrictions is the link to achieving optimal health.  A self-treatment program may also consist of postural changes, meditation, and stability exercises.

Jocelyn has created several tools for practitioners and clients to use for their self treatment program. These can be purchased in the Store .

Here’s what clients are saying about here Inner Guide to Stretching DVD: Chock full of user friendly information, easy to see, understand and perform. I love the ease at which Jocelyn moves through the variations of one stretch with multiple people and tools. The myofascial principles she shares throughout the videos are thought provoking and inspiring. The booklet is a great bonus. As a therapist I’m feeling even more confident about my own self treatment and look forward to integrating this into my clients treatment plans. The big bonus here, is that I can include *on the spot* DVD visuals. Great job!!
