Myofascial Release in the Traditional Setting

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Obtain a clear understanding of the fascial system and John F. Barnes Myofascial Release
  2. Accurately assess the body alignment and tissue tension to guide their treatment in 3 regions of the body
  3. Complete at least 3 deep tissue releases using the myofascial release techniques on scar tissue, contractures, and areas of high tension
  4. Incorporate 1 unwinding technique into a range of motion stretch
  5. Utilize the appropriate degree of rebounding to reset the body's holding patterns and decrease tension/tone
  6. Develop a treatment program for common injuries applying the myofascial release techniques to decrease pain and balance the body
  7. *This course is dominantly a hands on lab with the instructor assisting to guide participants to correct use of the technique. At the end of the course, participants will be broken into groups and provided a case study to develop and demonstrate a treatment plan for the patient in their case study. Full participation throughout the course is required.

*Please wear comfortable clothing and do not apply lotion to your body. Please cut your finger nails as well. If you have a massage table, please bring that with you or bring a soft mat and pillow for use during the course.

*This course is designed for the beginner level practitioner working in all settings that treat the young adult to geriatric population. This course is an AOTA educational level introductory, Category 1: Domain of OT and 2: Occupational Therapy Process.


This course is intended for OTs, OTAs. PTs, PTAs, SLPs, RN, ATs, and students of all disciplines mentioned above. Approval by the following governing bodies does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures.

Please note that this course is not to take the place of any John F. Barnes Myofascial Release courses, but serves as a basic introductory to myofascial release
